Lichen is a design and manufacturing studio. We create products that imaginatively combine materials in unusual ways. Often, the product enlists the creativity of the user in its design. It is our belief that a product should be elegant in both design and function. In the products we create, we strive to use materials that are either recycled, sustainable, or that are themselves recyclable.

Brandon Perhacs co-founded Lichen as principal designer in 2007. He had formerly studied at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, and then opened his own studio to design lighting and furniture. He is now the creative center of Lichen, generating concepts, constructing prototypes, and bringing his esthetic into the branding, marketing, and ethos that informs the company. His work spans a wide range of scales and mediums, from architecture to sculpture, furniture, lighting, and jewelry. He brings the same approach to the creative process in all of these forms, a belief in combining simple materials inventively to achieve a sense of balance, where the elements of material, design, and function merge into completeness, and the object expresses its underlying idea in the most elegant way.
