Since the 2005 introduction of her iSockit™ line of vintage fabric computer cases, artist, designer, and self-taught seamstress Blythe King has carved out an improbable niche in a saturated market. Using vintage fabric from old military uniforms, work clothes, and spare yardage gleaned from dressmakers estates, Blythe creates simple yet stylish cases tailored to fit an array of computers and portable electronic devices. While her creations have garnered a cult following among many environmentally conscious consumers, Blythe’s original decision to use recycled and repurposed fabrics was a pragmatic one: “I didn’t initially set out to make an eco-friendly product. My original attraction to vintage fabrics had more to do with aesthetics and cost. So much of the commercially produced fabric available off the shelf these days seems to be of a low quality, and the patterns are identical everywhere you go. With so much wonderful second-hand fabric out there, using new materials just doesn’t make sense.”

Of the thousands of iSockit™ cases sold since 2005, Blythe has personally designed, cut, stitched, packed and shipped every one herself, by hand.

A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., Blythe received a bachelor’s degree in East Asian Art and Religion from the University of Richmond, and a master’s degree from the University of Colorado.

She currently lives and works in Richmond, Va.
