Nowadays our life seems to run at the speed of light and it is truly a backbreaker to find a little extra time off.
There are endless time-consuming chores around the house to make it run smoothly. Even though finding time to read is challenging yet I decided to write a post especially on creating a perfect, cozy reading nook in your apartment or house. In case you have not paid much attention to any good books lately, the time has come to find an inspiring place in your household that would become a magical gateway to the fascinating world of reading.
I believe that no matter how minimalist your home interior is, there should be a place for a bookcase. A solid, built-in bookcase, with many shelves and compartments for different reading materials. That is why creating a little hiding space, off the main tracks in your home, helps to protect yourself from any distractions that are highly likely to occur (Ha!Ha! the temptation to check how many ‘Likes’ on Facebook your recent photograph has received could be overwhelming).
Latest survey has proven that reading books increase considerably abilities of our brain cells to work better. What is more, our social, motor and cognitive skills are likely to rise. Not to add our memory becomes packed with additional vocabulary and we tend to memorize and learn new stuff quickly.
Once we designate a spot in our apartment to remodel into a reading nook, it becomes a comfortable, quiet and cozy place not only to read but also to listen to favourite music, paint or write. I know that each household shall have a specially designed corner reserved only for such activities. You could call it whatever you wish: a reading corner, the latest book chair or an e-book nook. With my advice, you create the desired space for every member of your family.
1. Find a good spot
Choosing the right space for a Reading Nook is our priority.
Some of the most pleasant and alluring nooks are created out of the architectural alcoves and niches from an existing layout of our home. It could be a vacant corner or even a spacious closet. If you are a lucky owner of such design – it is going to be an ideal spot for your reading activities.
Unfortunately many houses nowadays are constructed not to leave any space unattended. So you may find it unavoidable to rearrange slightly the arrangement of furnishings. Your aim is to open up extra space to arrange a little getaway for yourself to unwind from any stress. Always pick a corner that is very silent. Hush, hush is the motto here! You do not want noises from the streets to disturb you in your peaceful spot, do you?
It helps a lot, trust me on that, to have an ultimately comfortable and designated place to read. As I mentioned, this spot is all about relaxation, so you can turn a corner of a spacious bedroom into your favourite reading nook. You can also transform a double closet, especially if it is wide and deep enough or a walk-in, and devote those areas to your favourite pastime activity.
2. Take a seat
A comfortable seating arrangement is a main essential to get your reading place started.
You definitely want it extra personal, so add without any hesitance, additional pillows to sprawl yourself comfy and throw a delicate blanket to cover whenever cold. Your main goal is to create a secluded retreat, and as a rule of thumb says ‘The cozier, the better snug’ so read my guide carefully.
“A comfy armchair and an ottoman are the best choices so the enthusiasts of reading can put their feet up while focusing on the book,” says interior designer Diane Bishop.
You ought to decide on the kind of chair. When it comes to choosing a right chair, the zoom word is ‘a comfort’ . What defines a comfort seating varies from a person to person.First of all, it should be comfy and cozy to sit. Either way, if you opt for a simple, deep and high-backed chair that will swallow you up, or a chaise lounge to stretch out in a favourite position, remember that upholstered arms and good back support are the only keywords you should follow. A rocking chair is also an appealing opportunity!
If you like to sprawl across a long seat, then a window seat or a daybed is the greatest option. Stretching out your body on a bench, accompanied with big, fluffy cushions seems like a mesmerizing idea for a majority of people.
Bearing in mind that some houses can be tight in space, throwing a bunch of pillows on the floor, with a feathery quilt could work miracles on such a retreated corner.
3. Keep it close to hand
If you have already organized your reading space with a perfect seating, it is a high time to create a library feel.
There is no need for a glitzy architectural detail to make it work. All you need is a table, large enough to hold your reading glasses, a lamp, and extra reading materials. For those valuable moments of inspiration keep handy a bunch of pencils and a notepad or a drawing pad! You never know when a spectacular vision is going to hit you, do you? Also, be careful with a cup of hot liquid nearby a set of books. Try using coasters not to spill any drinks on the pages…
Try to keep as many reading materials at hand as possible! Having books in sight creates a library feel and encourage to stay in your reading nook for a lengthy time.
Do not constrain yourself only to:
- poetry or
Far more challenging is a large variety of reading materials as you do not have to limit reading only to books. There are:
- audio books,
- comic books or
- photo albums to skim trough.
4. Light it up
Ideally, you want your reading nook nearby a huge window to let natural light stream in.
Unfortunately, when the sun starts to set, and the light becomes dim, it is more difficult to see the print. A meager light can lead easily to a severe eyestrain and migraines. Be aware that sitting in the scorching sun beside the window is not the brainiest idea too. You should drape a curtain, even a sheer one, to prevent from baking in the direct sunlight.
When deciding on a reading lamp, focus on an adjustable one, to have light falling point-blank on the pages. You have a limited choice of:
- a table lamp or a bedside lamp,
- a hanging light,
- a floor lamp.
A simple lamp, positioned on the bedside dresser will complete the task. “ A small lamp with a sheer shade will light the space and provide direct illumination for the words on the page,” says Jennifer Severson from Kathryn Johnson Interiors Inc. “Choosing the trendy style, and the lamp starts its double duty as a stylish element of Interior Design of any room”.
Opting for a hanging light means that there might not be sufficient light on the reading materials. It is possible that you will strain your eyesight to see properly the print.
If you choose a floor lamp with an adjustable possibility, it is probably the best version of a light source. An adjustable neck that you can turn directly onto your book is spot on! Moreover, it gives a perfect illumination and you do not have to divert your eyes to the source of light. Most people are used to a soft, yellowish glow which is not good for the eyesight. Instead, buy a certified bulb that produces light closer to the colour of daylight, with 60 or 80 wattages. A cherry on the cake will be a translucent shade, never opaque, which allow the bulb to brighten your reading nook excessively.
5. Add a dash of colour
As I stated clearly before, the huge impact on your reading spot has comfortability.
Not only it should be a nook pleasant to the eye but most importantly it ought to be an inviting, secluded retreat to indulge yourself without limit of time.
You need to remember to surround yourself with some decorative elements, like a family photo in a colourful frame, or a pot of flowers perched on the bedside table. What is more, that place shall be overflowing with cushions and blankets, soft and luxurious to touch. Mind you! Never use ostentatious hues and patterns! You do not want your attention diverted to something other than reading, do you? Choose neutral colours from a beige pallette. There is plenty of choices, beginning with buttermilk, hazelwood or biscotti shade.
Imagine having a comforting duvet to snuggle up comfortably with a sensuous feeling, your head propped up high on a plushy pillow. To add to that a good read with a hot cup of herbal tea! You created this intimacy all by yourself and need nothing more from life!
6. Make it personal
Start using your vivid imagination to personalize your reading space.
A perfect reading nook is all about you! It shall accommodate your needs as well as encourage you and other members of your family to read. Be fearless to state the obvious: reading is fun! It only depends on how your reading spot is going to look. Nothing should be permanent. You can change the layout depending on the season and your mood.
One of the greatest ideas of the century is enhancing your walls with posters! Not only they serve as art pieces, but they give you the courage to read. The recent surveys have shown that almost 18% of the population around the globe is still illiterate. Hopefully, this little reminder makes you stash away your laptop and instead reach out for an e-book or a traditional paperback.
Remind yourself the last time you visited a public library. The atmosphere there is filled with concentration and people seem to be extremely focused on reading. The walls of any library are propped up with illustrations, book quotations printed out on a fancy paper and pictograms or art images. They stimulate our brain cells to work more efficiently.
The same situation will happen to your home librarian corner. Envision such a spot with lots of stimulating art on the walls. Choose appropriate for your house interior design and to match existing decorative elements. To add a dash of splendour, frame some of the art elements, like posters to create a remarkable look.
It does not matter whether the reading nook in your family house is a rocking chair,a daytime bed or a pair of pillows with a blanket was thrown on the carpet, the most significant thing is the time spent on reading activities. Half an hour a day will make a huge impact on your life! Create reading your favourite pastime. Indulge yourself in brain activities and pamper with soft layers around you.
